Day 44 of 180 Days of Data Viz Learning #JFDI

I’m doing some form of data visualization learning for 180 days because I need to #JFDI.  See post explaining how and why I’m doing this.

Coding Learning

Knight Journalism Course for the Americas:  Data Visualization and Infographics with D3!

Week Three Scott Murray Lectures:

-Wonderful D3 tutorial and review

Three Takeaways:

  • Think of data that wants to be held, needing an anonymous function
  • .data() binds to elements to DOM, data makes comparison – look at dataset and compares to number of circles – counts and parses data values
  • .enter() subselection of data (placeholder selection for new elements) – give me placeholders for new elements to hand off reference to new placeholder to next step in the chain

Reading and Learning Data Visualization Theoretically/Critically:

The Best American Infographics 2014 “Us” Section p. 35-64

Three Takeways

  • Use of sequenced illustrations to demonstrate truncated info and narrative p 46 “Steps in a catastrophe” from Wapo
  • Mixed methods in using heaviness of lines (using weight) along with whimsical illustrations to show how the social networks of 1920s jazz artists were connected p 55
  • Use of weighted lines, colors, and view of globe from looking from the north (rather than typical horizontal view) showing global trade of tobacco in and out of the US p. 64
