I’m doing some form of data visualization learning for 180 days because I need to #JFDI. See post explaining how and why I’m doing this.
Reading and Learning Data Visualization Theoretically/Critically:
Reading Nathan Yau’s book Data Points – Visualization that Means Something
p. 87-105 The Medium and Representing Data
- The four parts of visualization are visual cues (shapes, colors, sizes), coordinate system, scale, and context p.95
- One danger using shapes and area (eg comparing sizes of two circles) is that there are often mistakes in increasing the area-> eg increasing sides of square by 50% rather than area by 50%, where you end up with an increase in 125%. p. 101
- The coordinate system used by pie charts is the polar system -> coordinates are placed on the radius r and angle 0 – > dude who knew p. 105
