Day 68 of 180 Days of Data Viz Learning #jfdi

I’m doing some form of data visualization learning for 180 days because I need to #JFDI.  See post explaining how and why I’m doing this.

Visualization Created

  • Because it’s work-related but want to note the accomplishment, put together and stylized another interactive viz at work using Javascript.  Nothing major, but a steps ahead of where I was before.

Code Review

Module Four Scales Review

  • Commented more code to review.  Realizing how little I knew before but how much more memory recall I’m having with the functions.

Reading and Learning Data Visualization Theoretically/Critically:

Reading Nathan Yau’s book Data Points – Visualization that Means Something

p. 151-165 Visualizing Time Series Data

Three Takeaways

  • Some easy ways to visualize time series using “length, direction, and position” p 155
    • Bar graph
    • Line chart
    • Dot Plot
    • Dot-bar graph
    • Radial Plot
    • Calendar “heatmaps”
  • “LOESS (or LOWESS) stands for locally weighted scatterplot smoothing…. which fits a polynomial function to a subset of the data at different points.  When combined, they form a continuous line.” p 158
  • Put together time series data in a way that can show cycles, different views to explore maybe needed for understanding, eg seeing dips in travel on a radial chart some days of the year, but looking at a calendar heatmap to see how holidays are what’s causing them p. 164
