I’m doing some form of data visualization learning for 180 days because I need to #JFDI. See post explaining how and why I’m doing this.
-Going on vacay tomorrow so will switch gears a bit next week and do some web dev lessons on Treehouse and watch Udacity while I’m mobile.
Reading and Learning Data Visualization Theoretically/Critically:
Reading Nathan Yau’s book Data Points – Visualization that Means Something
p. 165-176 Visualizing Spatial Data
- A key in dealing with spatial data is splitting it into groups so you can see data more clearly. Eg bubble charts on top of map or consolidating regions into other visuals p 168
- Be mindful of generalizing patterns around choropleths since many just end up reflecting population centers or the obvious – UFO sitings near airports p. 174
- Use other datasets to verify hunches with geographic patterns p. 176
