Day 77 of 180 Days of Data Viz Learning #jfdi

I’m doing some form of data visualization learning for 180 days because I need to #JFDI.  See post explaining how and why I’m doing this.

Code Learning:

  • Doing some “back to basics”
    • Front-End WebDev Course on Treehouse – Going through How to Create a Website

Reading and Learning Data Visualization Theoretically/Critically:

Reading Nathan Yau’s book Data Points – Visualization that Means Something

p. 243-259 Common Misconceptions

Three Takeaways

  • “Some assume that insight form every data graphic should be instant, and in many cases, this is perfectly valid… on the other hand a tool designed to explore connections between millions of people can be complex and require time to understand.  You might show simple views and aggregates, but you might also miss details that could lead to better understanding of the data.” p. 244
  • “The point of visualization is to understand relationships in data and patterns in data, so when you don’t have the data to do that, you don’t need to squeeze out something visual.” p. 248
  • Learn visualization rules, but don’t feel held by them hard and fast p. 254
