I’m doing some form of data visualization learning for 180 days because I need to #JFDI. See post explaining how and why I’m doing this.
Reading and Learning Data Visualization Theoretically/Critically:
Reading Nathan Yau’s book Visualize This
108-127 Visualizing Patterns Over Time
- “Sometimes it makes more sense to use points instead of bars. They use less space and because there are no bins, points can provide a better feeling of flow from one point to the next” p 112
- “One of the drawbacks of the standard line plot is that it implies steady change from point A to point B. That’s about right wit ha measure like world population, but some things stay at a value for a long time and then all of a sudden see a boost or a decline. Interest rates, for example, can stay the same for months and then drop in a day.” A step chart is better for this kind of data. p 123
- Use LOESS (locally weight scatterplot smoothing) to fit a curve to data to cut through noise. p 127
