Day 111 of 180 Days of Data Viz Learning #jfdi

I’m doing some form of data visualization learning for 180 days because I need to #JFDI.  See post explaining how and why I’m doing this.

Decomposition of a Visualization:

The Vicious Cycle Emerging Between War and Severe Weather Will Be Hard To Stop

  • What are the:
    • Variables (Data points, where they are, and how they’re represented):
      • Map locations – represented as choropleth and points on map
      • Numerical values and time series
    • Data Types (Quantitative, Qualitative, Categorical, Continuous, etc.):
      • Continuous trends
      • Categorical locations and characteristics
    • Encodings (Shape, Color, Position, etc.):
      • Color hue on both choropleth and points on map – good use of color hue and red and green scale
      • Line time series position and color
  • What works well here?
    • This is one of the better maps I’ve seen to prove a point without clutter or distortion
  • What does not work well and what would I improve?
    • Gain index and trendline not as clearly explained
  • What is the data source?  Do I see any problems with how it’s cited/used?
    • Global Adaptation Index
  • Any other comments about what I learned?
    • Good use to simple clean red to green color hue
