Day 132 of 180 Days of Data Viz Learning #jfdi

I’m doing some form of data visualization learning for 180 days because I need to #JFDI.

See post explaining how and why I’m doing this.

The Functional Art: An Introduction to Information Graphics and Visualization by Alberto Cairo

p 86-105 The Beauty Paradox: Art and Communication-> The Complexity Challenge: Presentation and Exploration

Three Takeaways

  • “Emotion and cognition are thoroughly intertwined… Beauty and functionality are intertwined, or should be” p 87
  • “Seeing, perceiving, and knowing are different phenomena.” p 98
  • Thinking about cognition, how the brain prioritizes visual phenomena is important as a design principle.  Much of response is unconscious.
    • eg. Because of the “eye-brain system’s attraction to moving objects and uncommon shapes, you should never simultaneously show an animation of the robot on the right side of the screen and a text box on the left” p 105
